communicating online Regardless of what type of online degree you are pursuing, you will be expected to participate in class with your peers and your instructor. This is an important part of your online learning experience. So make the most of it and use this forum as a place to practice using the rules of good grammar.

Online Discussion Forums

Often students tend to use lower case letters and  other shortcuts as if they are sending text messages. The discussion forum in your online classroom is not the same as sending text messages to friends.

You should consider this discussion to be a much more formal type of communication.  It is important to be professional, respectful and display your best skills as a communicator.

Proofread and Use Spelling and Grammar Check Tools

Take advantage of spell check and grammar check tools. You can always type your replies and comments into a Word document first and then post them into the discussion forum. If you don’t know how to use these tools, you should make it your business to find out based on the type of program you are using on your computer. Always proofread your messages before posting them.

Here is a great website called Study Guides and Strategies that discusses online Netiquette and many other topics of value for traditional and online students. Check it out! There is valuable information here.
