As mentioned in yesterday’s article, technology careers span a wide range of areas. Three important areas in the technology field include:
• Systems Administrator
• Database Administrator
• Network/Network Security Administrator
Although the roles and responsibilities of these three areas may overlap sometimes, some businesses have all three, so you can specialize in one area. But it is important for all of the IT staff to work closely together in any organization to maintain smooth operation of an organization’s technology system.
Systems Administrator
A systems administrator has the responsibility of keeping all computers running smoothly, performing maintenance and managing/upgrading the software used on the computers as well as hardware. Other duties often include staff training and support, researching and troubleshooting.
Database Administrator
The database administrator is primarily responsible for managing and maintaining an organization’s database. Making sure the information is backed up is also part of the database administrator’s duties.
Network/Network Security Administrator
A network administrator is responsible for the network infrastructure of a company including maintaining the server, switches, routers, cabling, etc. Also making sure the firewalls and other security measures are implemented to maintain the integrity of the network is also an important part of this role.
Of course, these are very general descriptions and depending on many different variables, these responsibilities will vary. Some companies may have a complete IT staff while other times in a smaller business, the job duties will include many different areas of keeping the technology of the company going.
