Getting Back to Reality After the Holidays
So the holidays are over and it’s time to get back to work, school and reality. This is a time when many people will be starting new classes and trying to find their groove for accomplishing their goals. If you are beginning a new class online, here are a few suggestions for getting off to a good start.
Congratulate Yourself for Taking a Step Forward
If this is your first online class, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed, and the first thing to realize is that it is normal to feel this way. Everyone else is probably feeling much the same, so my advice includes taking a deep breath and giving yourself a pat on the back for taking a step forward in reaching your educational and professional goals.
Then, dig in and figure out how to make the most of your learning experience. A major part of education is the willingness to learn from others, not just your instructors, but your classmates as well. You will have many opportunities to share your thoughts and ideas and it is important to learn to “listen” to others as well. Everyone has different perspectives when it comes to any concept.
Getting Started in the Right Direction
So where should you begin? I would say start by reading everything available to you provided by your instructor. Print your syllabus so you will have a tangible guide to help you find the answers to your initial questions. You may need to read and re-read certain parts for the instructions to sink in, and with a little practice, you will see that posting, discussing topics, and interacting with others will become easier and easier as time goes by.
