Advice for the First-Time Online Student?

online studentAt the end of each online course I teach, I always post this question: “If you were giving advice to a new online student, what advice would you give?”

Responses vary, of course, but there is always a common thread among them – primarily that learning to manage time is of utmost importance to success. (Personally, I think this is true of any successful person, but that’s just me.)

Most people who go back to school are already busy in a million different ways. Some students have jobs, children and other family responsibilities. Some are stay-at-home moms and /or single moms with more than one child to care for.

Some students are older and have been out of school and in the work place for years. They are faced with the challenge of figuring out this whole school thing all over again and in a very different way, I might add.

There are all kinds of circumstances in which people find themselves as students in a completely different world of online education. So learning to manage a brand new schedule to include studying, homework, reading, writing assignments, projects, and discussion forums in the midst of a busy life seems like a pretty big challenge to me. That’s why I admire all of my students for the step they are taking to better their lives and reach their goals by making the commitment to earning a degree.

Have you ever taken an online class? If so, what advice would you give a first-timer in the online classroom?
