The Woes of The First Week of Class
It never fails that a brand new class of enthusiastic learners posts their initial response to my welcome message, expressing both anxiety and excitement at the prospect of getting back into school to earn a college degree. So what do they do first?
It seems to me that there are two distinct types of students:
1. Those who take the time to read everything available so they won’t make big mistakes right off the bat.
2. Those who jump in with both feet and don’t read anything, thinking they can just wing it.
The first group consists of students who are very cognizant of the fact that they are embarking on a new experience and they recognize the need for guidance, so they read all of my messages that are posted for the opening day of class. They follow the step-by-step guide and begin completing the tasks outlined in the instructions.
Students who fall into group two usually just start posting messages and questions everywhere rather than simply reading through the information to find out what they should do first, where they should post responses, etc.
Getting Off to Good Start on Day One
I’ve been teaching long enough to know that everyone isn’t perfect, and I don’t expect perfection on the first day. What I do wish is that everyone would start by thoroughly reading the messages posted for day one, print the syllabus and the course calendar as directed and try to get a handle on the first steps. This would make life so much easier in the first week of class not only for them, but for me
