More About Technical Issues
As a follow up to my last blog regarding technical issues… over the weekend the University for which I teach online classes encountered technical issues which prevented students from being able to log on during part of the weekend.
Thank goodness, my university is on top of issues like these and notified the faculty advising us of the time during which students could not log in to post assignments.
My goal is to be fair to my students consistently, and I would never impose a penalty for late posting if there were no recourse for them. I still emphasize that a backup plan for personal technical issues is a must, but making sure students understand they will not be penalized for technical issues over which they have no control is very important to me.
Fairness to Everyone Should Be the Goal
Being fair to everyone has to be the goal of any good manager, supervisor, or instructor in my opinion. I believe if students realize their instructor has their best interest at heart, they will be much more likely to continue in their program of study and keep working toward their goals.
As an instructor, I always try to assure my students that I am their biggest cheerleader and that I want them to succeed. They seem leery of this in the very beginning, but with a couple of weeks of interaction, things usually settle down into a nice, friendly situation and they realize I am on their side. I try to provide the kind of feedback that will help them to improve and encourage them to keep working toward success rather than giving up.
