When you look at business and management degrees online, you will easily see that there a many opportunities to earn a degree in tons of different areas in management. As I was looking through some of these, I started thinking about what it is that makes a person a good manager.

I’ve worked in a lot of different situations and whether the title is manager or not, could be principal or director, but all in all it’s about the same. Most everyone has someone to answer to in their work or school situation. Even the owner or president of a company has to answer to investors, board of directors or at least his or her customers or clients. So in one way or another, I think we are all accountable, or should be, for what we do.

If I were asked to make of list of things to look for in a good manager, here would by my suggestions:

· First and foremost, the ability to listen to others

· An average size ego that doesn’t get in the way of making good decisions

· A person who is happy to give credit to others for their great ideas

· One who enjoys seeing others succeed

· A person who is fair and consistent in his or her dealings with everyone

· A good manager must be a planner, an organized planner

· Last, but absolutely not least, would be the person who doesn’t take himself or herself too seriously. Being the manager makes you no more important than the rest of your team. It just means that you have a big responsibility to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Keep in mind that these are the things I would look for in a good manager. You may disagree or have suggestions yourself. I’d love to hear them!
