Online Learning Benefits Veterans and Active Duty Military Students

American MilitaryEach term in my online classes, I have students attending on the GI Bill; some students are even on active duty while attending class. Online learning is a great opportunity for those in the military or those who have completed their service to our country and are ready to continue (or begin) working toward earning a college degree.

Flexibility is probably the number one benefit.

Whether you are on active duty or not, you can work your schedule around your career and earn your degree while managing other important responsibilities. Even if you travel, your online classroom is as accessible as ever – just take your laptop along with you.

Convenience is also important.

Enrolling in an online college degree program allows you to create a schedule that can really help you succeed. If you run into an obstacle or unplanned glitch in your schedule, you can easily make up the time wherever you are. It’s much easier to sneak in a few minutes or an hour to work on assignments or participate in a discussion online than having to be in a classroom at a certain place at a certain time.

According to the US Government Department of Veterans Affairs

“Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you must be enrolled in at least one classroom course to receive the housing allowance. The GI Bill is available for Independent, Distance or Internet training. This type of training is usually offered by IHLs and similar rules & rates apply.”

I also found an article that should interest anyone qualified for the GI bill called VA Reaching Out to Students and Schools to Speed Benefit Payments. So if you’re in the military or have been, maybe it’s time to consider taking advantage of the funding available to help you reach your professional and educational goals by earning your degree.

Accredited-Online-Colleges.com offers a directory of online degrees in a wide range of fields to help you prepare for the career you want.  Whether you want to earn your Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree or you’re ready to take your degree to the Master’s level, you can find many accredited programs to help you reach your goals.

I’m a veteran of the USAF. I was fortunate to complete my master’s on active duty using my CH 30 MGIB. I’m one year away from completing my EdD and my Post 9-11 benefits will kick in next month (Aug 2010). I’m very aware of the challenges presented to military men/women hindering them from beginning/returning to school. Online appears to be a great option for them; however, for those service men/women who are in “battle zones” …. I know it’s extremely hard for them to attend even an online course.

Hi Cristina,
First of all, thank you for your service to our country. I cannot imagine being in a battle zone, and I certainly have great admiration for those who risk their lives for our freedom. For those who can manage to do that and attend online classes, my hat it off! Congratulations on your work to earn your degree. Thanks for dropping by to read our blog. We welcome your comments any time.
