online students Friends are such an important part of life, no matter where or how we meet them. The value of a good friend is immeasurable.

Sometimes I think students in the online classroom miss out on really getting to know their classmates. Admittedly, it’s a little more difficult to make friends through the online classroom than it might be in a traditional setting, but it is definitely possible and certainly worth the effort.

Tips to Help You Get Started:

•    Introduce yourself to the class and include your hobbies, interests, educational and personal goals.

•    Take the time to read other students’ introductions.

•    Take the first step to reach out to another class member with a response to something he or she writes.

•    Use a positive tone and be supportive of ideas and suggestions of other students.

•    Start a chat in the chat room and try to get classmates to join in your conversation.

•    Suggest a study group in the chat forum to bounce ideas off each other.

•    See if anyone wants to become a Study Buddy to do peer reviews with you on projects and writing assignments.

•    If you find a student with whom you feel a particular rapport, find out if he or she wants to swap personal emails so you can keep in touch after the class is over.

Find out which class your new found friend(s) will be taking next and stay in touch through the course of your studies. Even if you aren’t taking the same classes next term, you can still be supportive and encouraging to each other, and this is something everyone can use more of on any given day.
