Homeland Security – An Emerging Career Path
Most all of us remember that terrible feeling of insecurity and disbelief when September 11, 2001 brought our country to its knees. If you’re like me, sometimes I still can’t believe it happened and yet I still remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when it was happening, and I will never forget those first few days afterward.
I lived in a flight path of the Orlando airport at the time. We were used to the planes flying overhead and it didn’t bother us at all anymore. We hardly even noticed, but the first few days after 9/11 what was so noticeable was the dead silence in the air except for the fighter jets flying above in a protective formation – Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center were not far away.
Of course our government sprang into action to provide more protective services for our country and created The Homeland Security Department. Since that time millions of dollars have been allocated to pump up the safety measures in the public and private sector. As a result many departments and positions have been created which in turn need trained professionals to fill these capacities. Online colleges and universities have added many different programs to their offerings as well to prepare those needed to fill the positions.
