How Happy Are You?

Happy FamilyI was talking to a friend today about happiness. Her mama always says, “Happiness is a choice and you have to choose to be happy.” It’s just one of the bits of wisdom I will always remember that she has shared with me over the years, and I completely concur.

Our discussion led to how happy can a person be if he or she is unhappy about different aspects of life. The question we were discussing was, “Can you be happy in your career if you’re not happy in your personal life or can you be happy in your personal life if you are unhappy in your career?”

It’s something to think about for sure. If we are not happy in a well-rounded way, it seems that one aspect of unhappiness can affect another, making us not nearly as fulfilled and happy as we could be.

I wrote an article not long ago “Can You List 5 Reasons You Enjoy Your Career?”  in which I asked the question whether you could name at least 5 reasons you are happy about your career. If you aren’t happy about where you spend the majority of your waking time, it seems logical that it would be difficult to say you are generally a happy person.

So what to do about this dilemma? Here are my humble suggestions:

  • Evaluate where you are in your career and in reaching your personal goals.
  • Decide if you really want to stay where you are or if it’s time to make a change.
  • Don’t feel stuck. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, you can do something different.
  • Figure out what it would take to help you make the change you want to make.
  • Take small steps in preparing to make a change. Then do it. The first time you take a step, you will be amazed at what can follow.

Now, let me clarify that I am no expert with credentials about how to be happy, but from my own experience, I have made quite a few big changes in my life and these suggestions happened to work for me, so I feel confident in sharing them with you.

From having lived life up to this point, I believe being happy is a choice, and I have chosen to try to make that happen throughout my life. I’ve had difficulties and challenges and disappointments in many different ways, but I’ve never lost sight of the fact that I am the only one who can make the changes I need to make to be in a better place in my professional and personal life.
