7 Reasons Not to Let Anyone Rain on Your Parade

7 April, 2010 (17:37) | Going Back To College Online | By: Sandy

My mama used to tell me, “Don’t let anyone rain on your parade.” I think it was wonderful advice then and it still works for me all these years later. It’s one of those sayings that is so appropriate for so many different situations.

In talking with some of my students, I find that they often have a wonderful support system when they make the decision to go back to school to earn their degrees. A spouse and family who are completely supportive make your work as a student so much easier.

Going Back to School Takes Commitment

Let’s face it, if you think going back to school is going to be easy, you really aren’t ready for this journey. It is not going to be easy. It is going to be time consuming and take lots of hard work; so your commitment needs to be strong. Having a strong support system definitely helps in every way. It helps you stay motivated and determined to succeed.

When You Don’t Have the Support You Need

But what about those who don’t have the support of everyone around them? Instead of support, some students are criticized for the amount of effort they put into their school work. Sometimes families are resentful of the amount of time a student pours into study time and the student is made to feel guilty about missing out on time with family and friends. Other times friends and even co workers can feel threatened about your determination and drive to better yourself.

That’s when you remember not to let anyone rain on your parade!

Stay strong to your commitment and feel free to use any one of these responses to defend yourself:

1. The sacrifices I’m making now will pay off later.
2. I’m determined to have a better future for myself and my family.
3. The hard work is worth it to me, no matter what I have to do to succeed.
4. As a college grad, I will have a lot more earning potential over my lifetime.
5. I am a role model for my kids to see how much I value education.
6. (For your kids) I love you and you’ll see why I’m doing this one day – it’s for YOU!
7. Don’t try to rain on my parade; I’m determined to stick with it!

Any other suggestions, anyone?

Normally don’t do this type of thing, but I just read this book and it was fantastic. Its called “You Have A College Degree, Now What?” and I now feel as if I’m in the right frame of mind for success to take place. I’m graduating from college in May and thanks to this book I now feel prepared. Here’s where I found it at. http://www.amazon.com/You-Have-College-Degree-What/dp/0578044048/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270658049&sr=1-1
