How is Your Online Netiquette?
In teaching online, I work diligently with my students to help them learn to communicate more effectively in all situations – work, school and personally. In the beginning, especially those who are new to the online classroom and are not particularly technology savvy, some students are unfamiliar with the do’s and don’ts of communicating online.
All Caps is My Biggest Pet Peeve
We all have our pet peeves in life; I personally have several, but when it comes to online communication, to me nothing is worse than ALL CAPS! which screams disrespect and an overbearing attitude. The sad part is when people use this unknowingly, not realizing that it literally means “shouting” in Internet communication terms. So I try to be understanding when I realize this is the case; however, I find it very difficult at times.
Students vs. the General Public
Having been a teacher for so long, I want to gently tell them that it isn’t the polite way to communicate. I have the same reaction when I hear poor grammar. With my students, I have no problem correcting them (in a polite way, of course). But in the general public, I don’t want to embarrass anyone or act like a know-it-all, so I sit quietly and cringe without taking any action.
So here is my humble attempt to spread the word that USING ALL CAPS ON THE INTERNET IS WRONG! (Do you see how obnoxious and irritating it is for someone to type in all caps?) I hope so
