Your Determination Will See You Through
Almost everyone I know has an incredibly busy schedule. Some have kids going in forty directions; others have careers that keep them busy with traveling, deadlines and day to day responsibilities. Regardless of the reason, almost everybody is on the go and trying desperately to keep up a hectic pace. It’s become the norm for the American culture.
Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way
Adult students who add attending college to their already-busy lives find time management a challenge, to say the least. But there are ways to make it work, as so many of them tell me. Remember that old saying, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way”? I think it is really true. You have to be determined and unwilling to give up if you’re going to make it work for you.
Support is Wonderful, but not Absolutely Necessary
The students who find it the easiest are those who have a good support system at home and in other areas of their lives. It is important to talk about what you are doing to others when you start back to school. The biggest advantage of this is that it helps you remain steadfast in the face of resistance.
Talk to your family and make sure they understand why you want to go back to school even though you know it may take away some of your free time to spend with them. Often children are very proud of their parents’ determination to earn a college degree. Spouses too!
Talk to your boss and make sure he or she knows what you are doing and why. On those days when you can’t stay late for work because you have class work to do, your boss may be much more understanding if he or she is aware of your additional responsibilities, especially if earning your degree will add value to the business in the end. If you’re going for a degree to be able to quit the job you have; this probably wouldn’t work to your advantage.
If you don’t have the support you need, it may be more difficult to stick to your goal, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up, even if others are not as supportive as you would like. It is your determination that will see you all the way through until you reach your final goal.
