In the workplace, we communicate in many ways, depending upon our roles, but we definitely have to communicate with others – sometimes verbally and sometimes through writing. Email has become the primary method many employees use to communicate with co-workers, supervisors and others outside the workplace.

In the online classroom, students primarily communicate through online discussion forums, and their communication is all done through the written word. This can be quite intimidating for many students who are not used to having to write out their thoughts others to view. Whether you’ve taken time to think about it lately or not, the way you communicate says a lot about who you are. Using your best skills when speaking or writing is important. Sometimes a situation calls for more formality than others, but when it’s time to be more professional, it’s a good thing to make sure you’re doing your best.
Before sending a written communication, make sure to take a few steps before hitting send:

- Proofread whatever you’ve written by reading it aloud.
- Have a co-worker, colleague or friend read over your work.
