No Such Thing as a Stupid Question

Learning to Listen and Ask the Right questionsThrough the years I’ve heard people preface a question with “Can I ask a stupid question?” The reply many times is, “There is no such thing as a stupid question.” This reply is meant to make the asker of the question feel less intimidated, and I think it’s a nice response to help others feel more confident in asking questions as well.

When You’re Assigned a New Task

When we are given a new assignment at work or in the classroom, many questions start popping into our minds. We can feel overwhelmed in the beginning of any new endeavor – it’s that old fear of the unknown that gets us every time.

Learn to Listen

I’m a big proponent of clarity and simplicity. I also think we need to learn to listen and hear what is being said before we start asking questions. If we become better listeners, many of our initial questions will be answered for us. If we jump the gun and start asking questions before we review information or listen to the person assigning the task, we can easily become more confused and frustrated.

Timing is Everything

The next time you are given an assignment in the office or in the classroom, give yourself some time to digest the assignment. Thoroughly review all of the information provided to you and then make a list of questions. Go back through your material to see if you can answer any of the questions on your list. Once you’ve exhausted your own resources, ask your questions and then, more than likely, they really won’t be stupid questions.
