Though none of us seem to have enough time in a day or a week to do all we feel we need to accomplish, we still have tasks that must be completed sooner or later. They never seem to go away by themselves.

Making Lists Will Help

As I’ve mentioned before, I am a big proponent of lists and I know I am not alone here. Many people I know live by lists just like I do. I think without prioritizing, we can’t ever really get ahead in our work or our classes.

If you’re struggling with a certain aspect of your job or your studies, make a list of what you have to do and determine which elements will be easy to accomplish and those which will likely give you more trouble.

Decide What Needs to Be Done First

I prefer to work on the most difficult or time consuming tasks first and save the easier ones for last. Somehow this just feels more rewarding to me. You may work the opposite way, and that’s perfectly fine as long as you accomplish your goals.

Review Your Feedback

When it comes to assignments, don’t overlook the feedback you receive from your instructor. The grade is not the only thing that’s important, it’s also discovering what you did well and what needs further study or work.

If it’s a task at work, you can do the same thing. Once you’ve completed a task, take time to review how things turned out either through feedback from your supervisor or just by reviewing your process and outcomes. Simply completing a task is not enough because when it’s time to attack the next challenge, you want to work even smarter and get even better results.

Making a list of your process and determining whether you could have done things differently will help you to improve in the areas that seemed most difficult as you were working through your task – whether at work or school.

You don’t have to do a cartwheel to get the attention you need, just read your directions, analyze assignments carefully, ask questions when you need to and everything should work out fine between you and your online instructor.

If I were starting an online class, here are a few things I would keep in mind to stay in good graces with the instructor:

• Always address your instructor by name – whatever he or she prefers to be called. It’s just a matter of respect and you should expect the same from your instructor.

• Turn in your assignments on time! Nothing is more irritating than chronically late assignments. It takes more time to go back and figure out deductions based on how late the assignment was posted and costs more valuable time!

• If you have a question, be reasonable and post it in time to get a response. Your teacher is not online 24 hours a day, and you are not the only student with questions. It is unrealistic to post a question an hour before your assignment is due and expect to get an answer in time. It could happen, but don’t count on it!

• Don’t demand help. Ask for it respectfully – your teacher is there (or certainly should be) to help you succeed and will be much happier to assist you if treated with due respect.

You don’t have to do a cartwheel to get the attention you need, just read your directions, analyze assignments carefully, ask questions when you need to and everything should work out fine between you and your online instructor.

So many single moms want to provide better opportunities for themselves and their children; and as I well know, “You can’t keep a good woman down!”

Inspiring Stories

I think of the sacrifice and the diligence with which these women strive to reach their goals, and I am always inspired by their stories. Supporting a family alone is tough enough, but with our economy in such a state, many have found themselves struggling even harder to stay afloat. Yet they are still determined and willing to take on more responsibility.

Nine times out of 10 these students say the impetus for their for enrolling in online classes to earn a college degree is because of their children and their desire to be a positive role model and to provide a more stable home.

Two great resources for single women looking for funding to go back to college:

Raise the Nation Foundation

Women’s Independence Scholarship Program (WISP)

Finding a way to reach your goals takes determination and desire, but with these two attributes, I believe success in imminent.

Thinking of going back to college? Thinking that you don’t have the time or that you can’t work it into your schedule?

“Patience is a virtue,” as the old saying goes, and it seems to me that it is becoming more and more unusual to find a person who has the virtue of patience. In our world of instant gratification and having most everything we need at the touch of a button, are we as an entire culture becoming more demanding and less patient?

In my role as an online instructor, I find some students who are very polite and respectful, and then there are others who think they are the only students in the classroom. One phone call and one message is not enough, I pick up my phone only to find FIVE phone calls and FIVE messages from the same person. Good grief, Charlie Brown! One will do and I will respond just as soon as I have a moment.

I pride myself in my responsiveness to students. I check for questions, I respond to phone calls, and most of all, from the beginning, I try to convey to students that I am there to help them succeed. So what’s this all about – demanding answers to questions within the hour or leaving a hundred messages on my phone?

I’d just like to say to all students everywhere – traditional or online – “You have classmates, and your instructor, if he or she is doing the right thing, is doing his or her best to meet your needs to provide the assistance you need.” It’s a good thing to remember that “Patience is a Virtue” and a very good one to develop.
