Since the beginning of this economic downturn, many jobless adults have made a choice to use their time of unemployment as an opportunity to prepare for a career with better possibilities when things pick up in the economy. And eventually they will.

Everywhere I look these days, I see businesses closing their doors and going out of business. I try to support local area businesses as much as I can, so when I see a local restaurant or shop closing their doors, I feel a sense of loss not only for my community but also for the employees who are sure to lose their jobs as a result. As we all know, once a job is lost these days, it isn’t so easy to find another one.

Not Having a Job Could Be the Perfect Time to Pursue Your Degree

Since the beginning of this economic downturn, many jobless adults have made a choice to use their time of unemployment as an opportunity to prepare for a career with better possibilities when things pick up in the economy. And eventually they will.

It may seem strange to some, but I have learned through talking about this with my students and others that it makes a lot of sense. If you can’t find a job, what should you do – just sit down and wait? I don’t think so; nor do my online students.

College Financial Aid is Available

Fortunately, there are many ways to get financial aid to go back to college; and more and more adults are taking advantage of this as they pursue their goals. Over and over I hear that students put off earning a college degree and then have never been able to find the right time to go back and earn that degree. So having lost their jobs and finding it hard to get another one, they’ve decided to do the one thing that may help them to find a more stable career.

I have to admire those who are “taking lemons and making lemonade” as my mama used to say. I am glad to be a part of the process as an online instructor. I love encouraging my students to hang in there and remain determined to reach their educational, personal and professional goals by going back to school – even during tough economic times.

If you have a story to share about why you chose to go back to college, please leave us comment and share your experience.

The need for special education professionals has never been greater. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the need for qualified special educators and related service personnel will increase “faster than most other professions” in the next 10 years.

And the U.S. Department of Education reports “The number of students with disabilities served under IDEA continues to increase at a rate higher than both the general population and school enrollment.”

So if you plan to stay with a teaching career in special education, you should make the most of the opportunity to earn your degree online while you maintain your current responsibilities.
