February 24th, 2014 by

Some of the top jobs of 2014 will be in the health care industry. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be significant job growth in the fields of support, home health and tech positions. According to Deborah Rowe, the senior director of Genesis HealthCare, personal care aides and home health aides are going to be vital this year. She says: “There is going to be a lot more community care that is going to be needed as we move forward.”

By 2050, says Rowe, there will be 21 million Americans over the age of 85. This will lead to a high demand for personal care aides and home health aides.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the health care industry will generate around a million new jobs through 2022, the majority of which will be in the fields of personal care and home health care.

Tech and Support

While the demand in the health care industry in the past mainly centered on clinical positions, the emphasis has now shifted to support areas such as technologists and medical staff services.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also predicts a great demand for nurses, with a projection of around 526,800 career opportunities by 2022. There is also significant demand for phlebotomists, medical assistants, surgical technologists, respiratory therapists, paramedics, medical secretaries and nursing aides.

Technical positions in this field include diagnostic medical sonographers, clinical laboratory technicians, veterinary technicians and technologists, and radiologic technicians.

Top-End Professionals

There will also be a steady increase in demand not only for dentists but also dental assistants and dental hygienists, particularly because there is now abundant proof of the close link between oral health and general health.

Veterinarians, pharmacists and physicians will encounter a similar increase in demand for their services.

Health and Wellness

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be 73,500 new jobs for physical therapists by 2022, while 32,800 new job opportunities will exist for occupational therapists. The aging population also contributes to a stronger demand for massage therapists and estheticians.

Under federal law, mental health is considered a chronic condition, which will cause an increased demand for substance abuse counselors, mental health counselors, family and marriage therapists, and clinical social workers.
