None of us like to contemplate the possibility that a catastrophic event might forever change our life. The reality is, however, that these things do happen; people are involved in serious accidents, some even go to war and might end up with permanent injuries such as the loss of limbs or brain damage. This is when they need a life care planner.
Life care planners use recommendations drawn up by medical professionals to determine the long-term cost of the patient’s care. They also help to develop support systems for the patient, taking into account the individual’s age and level of impairment. On an ordinary day, life care planners might spend 3-4 hours with a patient. The rest of the day is spent on developmental tasks and record keeping.
Human and Social Service Assistants
Human and social service assistants are usually employed under the supervision of senior level professionals where they assist people in need, including the elderly, disabled, mentally handicapped and homeless.
In this case their responsibilities might include helping such people to find personal care, counseling and rehabilitation services or to apply for public assistance.
Life care planners need extensive knowledge of both the legal and medical fields. This can assist them with determining the cost of equipment and services the patient will need, as well as payouts related to on-the-job or other injuries. Interpersonal skills are also crucially important, since life care planners often have to communicate with seriously injured or very ill patients.
The BLS projects a 22 percent increase in jobs for human and social service assistants between 2012 and 2022 – much higher than the national average for all jobs.
While the BLS does not release detailed statistics about life care planners as such, it does project that the number of jobs in social assistance and healthcare will increase by an average of 2.6 percent per year between 2012 and 2022, to five million. During the same period job opportunities in the healthcare support industry are projected to increase by more than 20 percent.
Individuals who want to register as a licensed life care planner must first obtain the relevant qualification by passing the Certified Life Care Planner Certification Examination. In order to pass this examination, the student has to study all the different aspects of life care planning. An online life care planning certificate is an excellent way to get started in this rewarding career.
